Commissioned by the Stuttgart Ballet, and scheduled for seven performances throughout the 2017-2018 season, "Even in the Oddest Times" is a piece dedicated to the choreographer, Fabio Adorisio. Through moments of clarity and calm in a persistently entropic, calamitous turbulence, this work illustrates the sense of direction and purpose one seeks in a personal odyssey. Elements such as extreme dynamism, irregular pulse changes, and varied texture are manipulated to capture the arbitrary, unforeseeable flow of emotions and events, whether it is absolute tranquility or utter chaos. Inevitably and repeatedly being plunged into states of disorienting confusion, then unmistakable lucidity, the listener must dance with a continual realism as the piece reaches a provocative, perhaps metaphorically temporary denouement.
Born in 1992 in Seoul, Korea, Nicky Sohn has recently been appointed as the composer-in-residence of the National Theater of Korea. Sohn’s music has been performed across the United States, Europe, and Asia. Some of her commissions include compositions for The Stuttgart Ballet, National Orchestra of Korea, and New York Choreographic Institute at New York City Ballet. She has served as the composer-in-residence of the Avalon Music Consort in Sweden, Washington Square Winds and Project: Sound. The 2017-18 season highlights consist of Sohn’s first opera, Emperor’s New Clothes for the UCLA vocal department, the premiere of a large orchestral work commissioned by the National Theater of Korea, and a commission from the Stuttgart Ballet. She has received an invitation to the Aspen Music Festival as a composition fellow for the upcoming summer.
Sohn is a recipient of many awards and honors including Peter Mennin and Vincent Persichetti Endowment Fund, G. Gershwin Memorial Scholarship, and Milton Babbitt Scholarship. She was named as the winner of the UCLA Wind Ensemble Thomas Lee Composition Competition and received the Leslie Bassett Graduate Award as well as an invitation to the Alba Music Festival in Italy as a graduate fellow in 2017. She completed her middle school and high school studies at the age of fourteen. She received her Bachelor of Music degree from the Mannes College of Music in 2014 with David Tcimpidis. Her Masters of Music degree is from The Juilliard School of Music where she studied with Robert Beaser and graduated in 2016. Sohn is currently a candidate for her Doctor of Philosophy in composition degree at The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music under the guidance of Richard Danielpour.
She was a member of the New York Youth Symphony's composition program from 2012 to 2014 and has attended several festivals including Ars Nova with Unsuk Chin and Seoul Philharmonic, Atlantic Summer Music Festival, Bowdoin International Music Festival, California Summer Music, and the Summer Festival of the Moscow Conservatory of Music.
Sohn has had lessons with some of the most well-renowned composition teachers including John Corigliano, William Bolcom, Richard Danielpour, Lowell Lieberman, Derek Bermel, and Martin Bresnick.
